University Leadership

Northeastern is a force for change, forever pushing higher education to stay ahead of the world’s evolving needs. The university’s leaders, too, are drivers of change, inspiring their teams to make the university better every day.

Senior Advisor for Experiential AI

Carla Brodley leads a college that is at the center of innovation, discovery, and learning across a broad spectrum of human endeavor. In collaboration with colleagues across the university, she is developing Khoury College into a leader in experiential AI—artificial intelligence that optimizes humans’ capacities to shape our world for the better.

A Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, Brodley’s interdisciplinary machine learning research has led to advances not only in computer and information science, but in many other areas. These include remote sensing, neuroscience, digital libraries, astrophysics, content-based image retrieval of medical images, computational biology, chemistry, and evidence-based and predictive medicine.

Brodley’s numerous leadership positions in computer science include program co-chair of the International Conference on Machine Learning, co-chair of AAAI, and associate editor of the Journal of AI Research and the Journal of Machine Learning Research. She is currently serving on the Computing Research Association board of directors; as a member-at-large of the section on Information, Computing, and Communication of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; and as a member of the advisory committee for the National Science Foundation’s Directorate of Computer and Information Science and Engineering.

Prior to joining Northeastern, she was a professor in the Department of Computer Science and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at Tufts University. She also served on the faculty of the School of Electrical Engineering at Purdue University.

Brodley earned a BA in mathematics and computer science from McGill University, and her MS and PhD in computer science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
